Home Work was produced by a small skeleton crew, therefore, most of us performed multiple roles on the production. I had the opportunity to develop story and write in addition to editing and prepping the episodes for other editors for remote workflow.
Starting with episode 102-Schoolhouse Guest Suite, I established an “essay” structure for the beginning of episodes. The “essay” would thematically set the stage for the episode’s main storyline and would showcase the deeper meaning behind that episode’s renovation. The “essay” structure is present on all episodes from 102 through 113 and in the Holiday Special.
One of the things I loved most about working on this project was the collaborative nature of the crew and subsequently how we approached crafting the story. Being an unscripted show, there are hundreds of hours of footage representing dozens of different paths and through lines to choose from for creating the story. We were allowed the freedom to make those decisions individually during the rough cut, while refining collaboratively during the fine cut.
Reviews and Awards
Daytime Emmy Win and Nomination
On May 5th, 2022, Home Work received two nominations for the newly restructured Daytime Emmy Awards. Comprising of two out of the five nominations received by Magnolia Network. Outstanding Instructional and How-To Program and Outstanding Main Title and Graphic Design.
On June 18th, 2022, Creative Arts and Lifetime Emmy Award Ceremony awarded Home Work the award for “Best Instructional and How-To Program”.

Before the linear launch of Magnolia Network, Home Work premiered on Discovery+ alongside other Magnolia original shows and the entire library of unscripted and reality TV programs and documentaries within the Discovery umbrella.
Discovery+ consists of current running and past hits on networks like HGTV, Food Network, TLC, History Channel, Animal Planet, of course Discovery.
Out of hundreds of TV shows, Home Work, was named to the top 10 for the entire streaming platform. Named in the same list as world renown classics such as: Anthony Bourdain’s “No Reservations”, “Mythbusters”, “Planet Earth”, and “Fixer Upper”.
Decider
Shortly after the launch of Discovery+, Magnolia Network released the pilot episodes of the forthcoming channel lineup of original content. In all, 22 original episodes were released. TV critic website, Decider, ranked all 22 shows with Home Work-being named number one.
